September 11 is this Wednesday. HB 1501 requires school districts to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001 with a moment of silence at the beginning of the first class period of the day. Before the moment of silence, the instructor must make a statement of reference to those who died on September 11, 2001. Principal Laroche has adjusted the district sample statement for elementary schools and will read this over the announcements on Wednesday, Sept. 11:
Today commemorates the events that happened on September 11, 2001. Even though you were not born in 2001, it is important to remember this event. The events of September 11th shocked the world and many lives were lost. People everywhere, and of all ages, sent cards, gifts, and money. Many came to New York City to offer help. The events of September 11th altered the course of history and have led to changes that impact our lives today. We must show kindness and understanding towards all people, and that we must have the courage to protect and defend each other. Our moment of silence today will be in memory of Sept. 11.
