Culture Fusion

Brentwood Elementary has a long history of supporting teaching and learning that addresses the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social needs of all learners.  Mrs. Katherine Williams-Carter served the school as principal for 33 years, and made it her life’s work to ensure that these core values guided the work of the school.  Under her leadership, the school adopted the Tribes model of fostering safe and caring environments in which students can thrive.  Tribes has played an integral role in the development of community on our campus, and continues to support the overall Social and Emotional learning of all students.  

In June 2016, with a huge support from PTA leaders, a team of teachers collaborated to create a teacher handbook meant to guide teachers at Brentwood in the process of blending the initiative on our campus. The team collected data from all stakeholders, and honored the desires of the community by preserving the Creative Learning Initiative, Lifeskills Agreements, Social and Emotional Learning, and Tribes Learning Communities.

Lifeskills

Each week the school focuses on one Lifeskill or Lifelong Guideline.  Teachers discuss it in class and put it in their newsletters.  The school will send home a sheet at the beginning of the school year with these skills printed on it.  Please reinforce these skills at home!

Encore/Specials

At Brentwood, your child goes to Music, Art, or P.E. class every day, based on a rotating schedule. The time that your child goes to the specials class is his or her classroom teacher’s planning period. This is often a good time to call to schedule an appointment with the teacher.

PE

Make sure your child wears closed-toed sneakers on P.E. day, and sunblock as needed. Annual activities in the PE program include Marathon Kids, Jump Rope for Heart, Field Day, and Fitnessgram (FG).

Encore Night

Since 2014, Brentwood Elementary has held an annual Encore Night, an interactive evening of fun and festivities for the whole family. This event is a chancel to celebrate the best of Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education at Brentwood. The date for the 2020 Encore Night has not yet been set.

Library

The library at Brentwood is a central hub of learning activity, supporting the  literacy needs of every student at Brentwood. Each class has a weekly library day when the whole class goes to pick out books. All Brentwood students have library privileges and can return and check out new books every week. The library also has research databases and e-books. The library is the scene of the annual Poetry Cafe and two annual book fairs. Brentwood’s librarian, Kate Slaten, arranges guest author visits every year.

Gifted and Talented

Brentwood provides screening, identification, and services for Gifted and Talented (GT) students. Once identified, students receive in-class GT services from trained teachers.

What are the characteristics of a Gifted & Talented Student?

How does the gifted and talented program work at Brentwood?

  • All 2nd-5th Grade Teachers are required to be Gifted and Talented Trained and each year will continue GT education training.  There are also some K/1 teachers who are GT Trained.

  • Brentwood does not have a pull-out GT program. Instead, GT students are given enrichment opportunities with other GT students within the classroom and offered differentiated instruction within the classroom.  

  • Teachers have access to GT Teacher Resources and Exemplar Lessons to embed into the curriculum for their GT identified students.

  • Your child’s teacher will share with you what your child is doing at Parent Conferences (October and February) with the GT Student Service Summaries

How can my child be identified as Gifted and Talented?

You can nominate your child for screening, or your child’s classroom teacher can make the nomination. One evening information session before each nomination window will be held at Brentwood Elementary. The calendar for the assessment can be found on the AISD website. Students may be identified as GT in one or more of the following content areas:

  • GT STEM (science and mathematics),

  • GT Humanities (language arts and social studies),

  • Talent Explore STEM (science and mathematics), or

  • Talent Explore Humanities (language arts and social studies).

Brentwood Elementary encourages children to be tested at 2nd grade and higher. The required testing for GT is entirely computer-based, and it is often harder for children in the younger grades to focus and perform their best. Students are better able to show their strengths on testing when they are 7 or older.

What if my child is not identified as GT?

  • Some children who are very high achievers (teacher pleasing, organized, task driven, bright) do not quality for GT. There is not a one:one relationship between the two sets of traits.

  • Getting a teacher’s opinion on the nomination upfront can be helpful.

  • Your child can also re-test, as it could be that they were not mature enough to take the test.

Science Fair

Every January, Brentwood students participate in the Brentwood Science Fair. All 3rd-5th Grade projects will be considered for the Austin Citywide Science Fair in February.  Only 3rd through 5th are eligible to move on to the city level.  Pre-K through 2nd graders can participate at the school level here at Brentwood.

The website includes rulesjudging guidelines, and sample judging sheets for those of us who like to prepare our kids. The notebook requirement is waived for Pre-K through 2nd grade participants at Brentwood

Literacy

 Reading at Home Can Make a Huge Difference!

  • Choose books that are at an appropriate reading level for your child

  • Use the 5-finger rule. Open the book to any page and ask your child to read. Put up a finger every time your child does not know a word. If you have put up more than 5 fingers before the end of the page, this book is too hard for your child.

  • Choose books that match your child’s likes and interests.

  • Keep plenty of reading materials in your home: books, magazines, newspapers, and comic books. Children enjoy having a variety of reading materials.

Make reading a part of your family time! Family time is so important… Why not make reading part of this valuable time with your kids? Here are some tips for integrating reading into our daily family activities:

  • Read bedtime stories

  • Play a board game

  • Visit your local library

  • Read a recipe and cook something yummy together!

  • Create a comfy reading space in your home.

  • Put your child in charge of reading the grocery list at the store.

How to Read With a Beginning Reader:

  • Encourage your child to use his/her finger to point to each word.

  • Read a sentence and have your child repeat it.

  • Take turns reading a sentence each or a page each.

  • Talk about the story as you read it. What do you think will happen next? What does this story remind you of? How do you think this character feels?

  • Don’t be afraid to read the same book again! Repeated reading helps build reading fluency.

  • 15 to 20 minutes is plenty for a beginning reader!

Check For Understanding:

  • Start the book by making predictions. What do you think will happen in this story?

  • Ask questions and make comments during the reading process.

  • After reading a book, have your child tell you the events from the story in the correct order.

  • What was the problem in this story?

  • How did the character feel when…?

  • Encourage your child to make connections. Does this story remind you of another book you read, an event in your life, a movie, etc?

Brentwood has a number of special education programs on campus, including the following:

Auditory Impairment Program

Brentwood Elementary has a specialized teaching team for students with Auditory Impairments. The students receive individualized instruction as needed but are included in general education classrooms for much of the school day.

SCORES

Social Communication Resources and Services (SCORES) is an instructional service that supports students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and/or other disabilities demonstrating impairment in social, communication, and behavioral skills. Social Behavior Skills

Social Behavior Skills (SBS) is a service that provides behavioral support and interventions to facilitate the emergence and development of an internal locus of control that equips students to think, decide, and make choices in the self-responsible ways that can lead to success and joy in living. Campus Advisory Council 

School districts are required by state law (Texas Education Code, S11.251) to establish Campus Advisory Councils (CACs).  The mission of CACs is to promote excellence in education for all students through broad-based representation. CACs provide valuable input to campus planning and operational decision-making. Brentwood’s CAC includes staff, family, community, and business members and meets approximately once per month. CAC provides input into decisions regarding staffing, budgeting, curriculum, and professional development. CAC membership is a two-year commitment (unless serving a partial term). The CAC is an advisory body; the principal has ultimate decision-making authority on the campus.

Interested in serving on the Brentwood CAC? Start by downloading a standard membership application from Austin ISD. We strive to fill these volunteer positions with the intention of forming a diverse group of members who share our campus vision, “Brentwood Elementary is committed to developing the whole child by creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where every child may experience academic and social success.“

Since membership is determined at the campus level, submit your completed applications to our  principal. The district also has detailed information on membership criteria in the CAC Bylaws.
